The NCAA timeline for the class of 2030

1. Now → 1 September 2028 — Division I coaches may register interest only through the travel coach or team liaison. Direct contact with a player or her family is not permitted. Coaches can watch, evaluate and ask the staff about a player at any time.
2. 1 September 2028 — the first date Division I coaches may contact players in this class directly: phone calls, email, off-campus contact, and official and unofficial visits. Softball is a named exception to the general June-15-after-sophomore rule and waits until September 1 of junior year.
3. Junior and senior years — visits, offers and signings follow.

Division I rule verified against NCAA.org on 17 August 2026. It changed in April 2018 to curb early recruiting; anyone quoting an older “baby commit” timeline is describing a system that no longer exists.

This is a Division I rule — and only a Division I rule

1 September 2028 is the NCAA Division I date. Division II, Division III, the NAIA and the junior colleges each run their own recruiting calendar, and they are generally far less restricted than Division I.

This matters more than it sounds. A family who reads “no contact until 2028” and applies it to every college in the country will sit out two years of conversations that were never prohibited. There are several hundred non-Division-I softball programmes, a good many of them strong, and the 1 September 2028 date does not govern any of them.

We state the Division I date because we have checked it. We are deliberately not publishing a table of dates for the other divisions — we have not verified those against their own rulebooks, and a club site quoting a wrong compliance date to a family is worse than one that says plainly where its knowledge stops. If you are talking to a non-Division-I programme, ask that programme, or check that division's own rules.

What a player and her family can do right now

The rule restricts what a Division I coach may start. It does not restrict the player. Before 1 September 2028 a recruit in this class can:

1. Write to any programme she likes. A recruit may email or call a college coach at any time. A Division I coach cannot reply before the date — but the message is read, and it is on file when the date arrives.
2. Fill in recruiting questionnaires. Almost every programme publishes one. They can be completed at any age and they are how a name enters a coach's system.
3. Be evaluated. Coaches may watch this class play whenever they like. Evaluation was never restricted — only contact was. That is exactly why the tournament schedule and the film matter now rather than in 2028: the 2026–27 tournaments.
4. Keep the profile current. Positions, measurables, academics and recent film, in one place a coach can find — foothillgold2030.com/team. A profile that is two seasons stale is worse than none.
5. Attend camps and clinics. A college's own camp is a setting where a player and a coaching staff are in the same place legitimately.
